Favorite Local Spots in San Francisco

Recommended places in most guidebooks or popular sites always mention the same spots, where the locals never go. Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Warth, Union Square are touristy places, that locals almost never go to.

Let me share some of my favorite local spots, that are not ridiculously popular, which means you don’t have to wait in line for an hour to get food. These spots are a bit of a hidden gem and off the beaten path.

Philz Coffee on 24th Street

The very first location of Philz Coffee – San Francisco’s most favorite coffee spot. Now you can find 11 Philz locations throughout the city, but this is definitely a local’s favorite.

What to order: Sooo Good Coffee (light roast), Mint Mojito, Turkish Delight

Location: The Mission – 3101 24th St, San Francisco, CA 94110

The Interval at Long Now Foundation

The Interval is a very unique space. It is a part coffee shop, part bar and a part library filled with floor to ceiling thousands of books selected for their value in sustaining and rebuilding civilization.

Location: The Marina – Fort Mason Center, Bldg A, 2 Marina Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94123

20 Spot

Former record store turned a cozy little wine bar and restaurant in the Mission. 20 Spot is a little hidden gem of the neighborhood. You might recognize the area from Woody Allen’s movie “Blue Jasmine”, which filmed some of the scenes in the apartment upstairs.

Location: The Mission  – 3565 20th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110

Mile Rock Beach

Mile Rock Beach is not the most popular San Francisco beach even though it is secluded, has stunning view of the bridge and is protected from the wind. Why? Because an 1.8 mile hike down and back up awaits the visitor.

For those who don’t mind the extra exercise, you will be in for a treat of a beautiful sunset, a sight of thousands of little rocks stacked to create the picturesque formation. Don’t miss the Land’s End Labyrinth on your way down to here.

Location: Sea Cliff- Enter the Lands End Trail at El Camino del Mar and Point Lobos Avenue

Marshall’s Beach

Marshall’s Beach is another, an unforgettable spot with Golden Gate views that requires a bit of a hike down.

Location: Presidio – Park off of Lincoln Blvd, and follow Batteries to Bluffs trail.
